Mental Health Lived Experience ; we are pleased to announce Dr Louise Byrne, Lecturer, University Central Queensland as a Keynote Speaker at The 17th International Mental Health Conference; Guiding the Change.
The 2016 Conference will be held at the brand new Sea World Resort Conference Centre on the Gold Coast, from the 11 -12 August 2016.
Dr Louise Byrne will be speaking on ‘Lived Experience Leadership, the Heart and Soul of Recovery’.
Mental health reform in many Western countries including Australia and New Zealand, is inextricably linked with the Recovery approach. However, the mental health system faces significant challenges understanding and implementing Recovery meaningfully. Recovery was devised and championed by people with a lived experience of diagnosis and service use. Collectively and individually, people working in lived experience roles possess in-depth understanding of Recovery concepts.
This unique knowledge can be a valuable resource to provide philosophical leadership and guide Recovery implementation, if roles are designed and positioned with a capacity for influence.
Dr Louise Byrne works within the mental health sector from the perspective of her own experience of significant mental health challenges, service use and Recovery. Louise has worked from her lived experience in a variety of roles in government, non-government and tertiary settings since 2005. She currently works at CQUniversity, Australia where she is employed as a lived experience in mental health academic and with the Queensland Mental Health Commission as a ‘lived experience expert’.
Louise teaches the Recovery approach in mental health and conducts research focused on the experiences and needs of the lived experience workforce. Louise has won numerous awards for her ground-breaking work including the Queensland Mental Health Week Individual Achievement Award. Louise is regularly invited to speak at conferences and a range of media including being a panellist on ABC television’s popular program ‘Q&A’. Louise believes firmly in the role of industry based and focused research in aiming for best practice.
