Introducing Scientia Professor Helen Christensen

Scientia Professor Helen Christensen, is an Australian mental health researcher with an interest in using the Internet to prevent suicides. She is Director of the Black Dog Institute, at the University of New South Wales and a National Health and Medical Research Council John Cade Fellow. She is the author of over 400 refereed journal articles, seven consumer books and a number of open access websites and apps. Her areas of interest include the evaluation of internet applications/ online programs for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders, the integration of new technologies into health care, stepped care in mental health and suicide prevention.

Scientia Professor Helen Christensen will present a Keynote Address at the 8th Rural and Remote Mental Health Symposium at Mantra on Salt, Kingscliff, NSW from 2-4 Novemberon on 'Suicide Prevention – A Systems Approach'.

‘Suicide prevention has become a national priority in mental health and a core target activity for LHDs, PHNs, clinicians, communities, and health networks.  In this presentation, I will outline the strategies that have been found to work to reduce suicide rates globally and which are likely to have the greatest impact. Each of these impactful strategies will be examined further to understand how each can be implemented at a local area; and the steps local communities and health groups/networks can make to understand the nature of suicide and suicide attempts in their regions.‘
