The National Mental Health Commission: reviews, report cards and reform

Written by Brittany George | Jun 1, 2014 10:36:08 PM

The National Mental Health Commission has been tasked by the Australian Government to undertake an independent review of the mental health system. This review is examining existing mental health services and programmes across all levels of government, and the private and non-government sectors. It is focussing on efficiency, effectiveness, gaps, duplication and unnecessary red tape. It will provide pragmatic advice on how we invest and what we invest in to help people with mental health problems, their families and other support people to lead a contributing life.

Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, David Butt will present at the 15th International Mental Health Conference. Mr Butt will discuss how people with mental health difficulties, their families and supporters need much more than access to good mental health services. They also need somewhere secure to live, something to do, someone to love and connections with their community.

Mr Butt will cover the importance of the Commission’s work to date in telling the real experiences of real people and placing them at the centre of the argument for long-term change and reform, and how this review will continue that commitment.

Mr Butt will also provide update on the other projects the Commission is undertaking and how improving services and outcomes for people with mental health problems, their families and supporters relies on the whole sector working together.
