Behind every impactful organisation is a story - one shaped by passion, purpose, and a deep commitment to people. For Kym McMinn, that story is grounded in lived experience, strong values, and a clear vision for a better, more inclusive support system.

As the founder ofT and K Support Services, Kym has built more than just a service provider -she’s created a community that walks alongside individuals, empowering them to live fuller, more independent lives.

Kym emphasises that a diagnosis does not define a person. As part of the T and K Services motto, we say “Identity Before Diagnosis.” While a diagnosis may highlight certain traits, challenges, or patterns, it cannot encompass the entirety of an individual - their personality, cultural background, values, relationships, aspirations, and life story.

By prioritising identity, we recognise people as complex, whole individuals rather than reducing them to a label or category.

A Purpose-Driven Beginning

Kym’s journey into the Disability, AOD and Mental health sector wasn’t driven by business ambition - it was driven by purpose.

Her work reflects a deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals navigating complex support systems, and a determination to do things differently.

At the core of her philosophy is a simple but powerful idea: services should be built around people - not systems. Rather than focusing on ticking boxes or on compliance first, Kym believes in starting with participants' real needs, goals, and lived experiences.

Building “Backwards” - A Better Way Forward

One of Kym’s most distinctive approaches is what she describes as “building backwards.” This means designing services from the participant’s needs upward, rather than from administrative or regulatory requirements downward.

This approach ensures that:

• Care is genuinely person-centred

• Systems exist to support people - not the other way around

• Quality outcomes are naturally embedded in everyday practice

Kym’s perspective challenges a common issue in the sector: services that meet compliance standards but fail to truly support individuals. Her model flips that narrative, proving that when you prioritise people first, both quality care and strong systems follow.

Leading with Values

At T & K Support Services, values aren’t just words- they guide every decision and interaction. These include:

• Trauma-informed practice

• Inclusion and equality

• Lived experience within the workforce

• An open-door approach to complex needs

Kym is particularly passionate about supporting individuals who are often labelled “too complex” by traditional services.

Her team embraces these challenges, ensuring no one is left behind.

This commitment is reflected in the organisation’s broader mission: delivering personalised, holistic support that enhances quality of life and builds independence.

People First - Always

One of the defining characteristics of Kym’s leadership is her focus on people - not just participants, but also her team.

She believes in hiring for heart first, skills second, recognising that while technical skills can be taught, compassion cannot.

This philosophy has helped shape a culture where:

• Staff feel supported and valued

• Relationships are prioritised over rigid processes

• Genuine care drives outcomes

It’s a reminder that meaningful support starts with meaningful connections.

Filling the Gaps in the System

Kym has also been intentional about addressing areas where support is often lacking - particularly in:

• Psychosocial disability

• Mental health support

• Alcohol and other drug (AOD) support

• Regional and underserved communities

By identifying and responding to these gaps, T & K Support Services continues to evolve in ways that truly meet community needs.

A Vision for Sustainable Impact

In a sector where rapid growth can sometimes compromise quality, Kym advocates for a different path: slow, ethical, and sustainable growth

Her focus is on:

• Long-term relationships over short-term gains

• Consistency and trust

• Protecting the well-being of both participants and staff

It’s a model that not only strengthens outcomes but also ensures the organisation remains grounded in its original purpose

More Than a Service - A Community

Today, T & K Support Services stands as a reflection of Kym’s vision: a place where inclusion, empowerment, and connection are at the centre of everything.

Whether it’s through day programs, personalised support, or community events, the organisation continues to create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and supported.

Because, as Kym’s work consistently shows, real impact happens when we move beyond systems - and truly invest in people.

Final Thoughts

Kym McMinn’s story is a powerful reminder that meaningful change in the support sector doesn’t come from policies alone - it comes from people who are willing to challenge the norm and lead with purpose.

By putting individuals first, embracing complexity, and building services around real human needs, she’s not just running an organisation - she’s reshaping what quality support can look like.

Special words from Kym:

“Support should be honest, relational, and grounded in trust,” she says. “And it should never lose sight of the person at the centre of it all.”

“When we see people for who they are, not their diagnosis, not their label, not the narrative the system has created around them, that’s when real change happens”.

“Sometimes all it takes is helping someone hold a tiny bit of hope until they can find their own light again.

And to everyone out there doing the hard yards, walking beside people, holding space, navigating impossible systems, fighting barriers, refusing to give up: keep going”.

“Keep punching. You might be the only one giving light in someone’s darkness”
