The 7th Australian Rural and Remote Mental Health Symposium Program Committee is pleased to announce Professor Peter Harvey from the Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health (GGT UDRH) will be a Keynote Speaker for the event. The Symposium will be held 26 – 28 October 2015 at the Novotel Forest Resort Creswick, Victoria.
Speaker Bio: Peter is the Director of the Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health (GGT UDRH), a partnership between Flinders University and Deakin University.
Prior to this position, he was the Director of the Flinders Centre for Gambling Research and Manager of the State-wide Gambling Therapy Service in South Australia. He is involved in research into the outcomes of gambling treatment programmes and the community impact of the burgeoning gambling industry. Peter is also a member of the executive team of Flinders University’s Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity and remains active in research into chronic condition management and self-management, Aboriginal health and rural health.
Peter has a background in English, Mathematics and Science teaching, school development, curriculum consulting and organizational change leadership. His work in the health sector has focused on developing integrated primary care and health management strategies to improve health outcomes for people with chronic and complex health conditions.
From 2001 to 2004 he led the Sharing Health Care chronic disease self-management demonstration project in South Australia and from 2003 to 2008 was a chief investigator with the Centre of Clinical Research Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health in South Australia; a National Health and Medical Research Council funded collaborative project between the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia and Flinders University.
From 1996 to 2000 he led the rural component of the South Australian Council of Australian Governments national coordinated care trial. His PhD, completed in the School of Medicine, University of Western Australia, was based on this coordinated care trial and explored the health benefits and systems change processes of the South Australian rural sector trial.
