About this position

Southern DHB covers the largest geographical catchment of all the DHB's in New Zealand. We proudly strive to provide top quality healthcare to our diverse patient population and we are recruiting for a Consultant Psychiatrist based at Dunedin and Wakari Hospitals.

Incorporating yourself into both our Acute Inpatient and Emergency Psychiatric Service, Rural Community Mental Health teams this role involves the assessment and treatment formulation while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) and engaging with the wider mental health and addictions sector.

About the departments

Our 16 bed open plan Acute Inpatient ward, provides care for the full range of general adult mental health disorders. Here you will work alongside experienced clinical staff and become an integral part of the multidisciplinary team. The Inpatient service has strong clinical relationships with all parts of the Mental Health Service and operates as part of an integrated model of care to provide a comprehensive and seamless service to the population of the Southern District Health Board.

The Rural Community Mental Health teams provide a range of specialist mental health services in the community for example child and adolescent services and addictions. A multidisciplinary team of health professionals provides a range of services for all people who experience significant mental illness or distress.

On the other hand, our Emergency Psychiatric Service provides around the clock urgent crisis assessments and interventions for consumers of all ages. A mobile service you will use consumer assessments to establish acuity and decide on further treatments or interventions.

About you

In both areas you'll be an integral and valued member of a multidisciplinary team that ensures we provide our clients with assertive follow-up by maintaining contact with individuals through the key worker system. You will have a personal commitment to maintaining high standards of practice and an unequivocal dedication to working as part of a team. Your ability to provide clinical leadership and reliable medical input to the multi-disciplinary team is pivotal to the position and previous general adult experience in either an inpatient or community setting is essential.

You will have a strong commitment to service user and family / whanau inclusion in service delivery and a focus on recovery.You will also have a sound understanding and commitment to biculturalism.You will have a demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and providing training to students at all levels.

You will be required to participate on an on call roster providing after hours coverage for the Otago part of the wider Southern DHB district. Fellowship with the RANZCP or equivalent is essential and you must be eligible for registration with the NZ Medical Council.

Covid vaccination requirements

Following the update to COVID-19 Public Health Response (Vaccinations) Order 2021 this also includes the requirement that you are fully vaccinated against COVID 19 by 1 December 2021, as a health care worker. If you have already been fully vaccinated you will need to provide proof of this to Occupational Health staff. If you are not yet fully vaccinated you must make arrangements to ensure you have received at least one vaccination before starting work, and be fully vaccinated, as required by the order, by 1 January 2022.
