We are pleased to announce Professor Helen Herrman, Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health and Centre for Youth Mental Health, The University of Melbourne as a Keynote Speaker at The 17th International Mental Health Conference to be held at the brand new Sea World Resort Conference Centre on the Gold Coast, QLD from the 11 -12 August 2016. The keynote will be speaking on; ‘Improving the Mental Health of Vulnerable Young People Removed From Their Families’
Young people unable to live with their families because of abuse, neglect or other adversities are placed by the state in out-of-home care (OoHC). The Ripple Project funded by Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (2013-2017) is investigating a systematic and affordable approach to improving mental health for young people aged 12‐17 years living in OoHC. Many of these young people have poor mental health and social function and multiple and complex needs before, during and after leaving care.
The project has developed a practical mental health intervention to support their foster, kinship and residential carers. The aims are to investigate its implementation and whether the mental health of young people living in OoHC improves: through supporting (i) the consistency and quality of OoHC for all young people in the sector, and (ii) access to early intervention when indicated for prevention and treatment of mental illness.
Helen Herrman is Director of Research at Orygen: The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health, and Professor of Psychiatry in the Centre for Youth Mental Health, The University of Melbourne, Australia. She is President-Elect of the World Psychiatric Association, President of the International Association of Women’s Mental Health, and Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for mental health in Melbourne.
The 17th International Mental Health Conference; Guiding the Change will be held at the new Sea World Resort Conference Centre on the Gold Coast from the 11 -12 August 2016.
This conference will bring together leading clinical practitioners, academics, service providers and mental health experts to deliberate and discuss Mental Health issues confronting Australia and New Zealand.
